On 27th September 2024, together with the local leaders and community members, we carried out a clean up of the water channels in Kasokoso slum. We found a lot of garbage dumped in the water trenches. We got reports as well of poor waste disposal which were putting the Kasokoso inhabitats at a great risk.

We were happy with the community members who were very active and welcomed this cause.

“This is supposed to be everyone’s concern but many of us just wait for organisations like Green Foster Action to first get involved, which is bad,” said Robert one of the local leaders.

“The proper disposal of wastes affects us the people staying around,” said Bridget, our Finance and Administration lead. “We can not keep saying that Government etuyambe (Government should help us) yet it is us contributing to our own sickness through poor disposal of wastes.” She added.

The community members who were largely made of the youths promised to heed to the call and carry on the message to other communities. They thanked Green Foster Action for bringing such messages to awaken them.

Many of the drainage channels in Kampala are fond of being made dumping grounds for home refuse as well as human waste, especially around slum areas. We are focused on sensitizing the people in these areas about the dangers of poor waste disposal as well as carry out cleaning of the water channels with the community members.

This should be a clarion call for everyone to get involved in such activities in whatever jurisdiction in order to create a healthy environment for everyone.
